The Ultimate Legend

The image above is a wonderful R&B singer by the name of Sade. The image includes a brown dissolved background. Sade has both of her hands together as if she is praying. Planted on her face is a sign of seriousness. The main idea of this image is to take pride in yourself, learn how to be confident and fierce. I think this is the message, because knowing the facts about her and her history behind her music and the message her music sends to people. You would automatically think that her message in this image Is to be confident, fierce and have pride in yourself and what you do. Live, laugh, and love. I think this message is important, because you only live once like Drake said, so why not learn how to love endlessly, love yourself and gain confidence.

Benefit Debate

I’m Black and I Want More “Stuff” and “Things”: An Open Letter to Bill O’ Reily an article written by an high school teacher in Seattle reacting to the words of Bill O’ Reily. The point of the article was that minorities would automatically vote for Barack Obama, because we “want things". A president who is willing to present minorities with certain benefits. Bill also stated that America isn't as traditional as it was. I believe this is, because a president of color was brought into office. The message is important, because everyone is entitled to their own opinions to a certain extent. A certain extent, because basing a president on the number of votes received, because the president is a minority and minorities are willing to have a president of color in office is a bit absurd. Keeping in mind of the limits of your opinion is important. The article presents the message in different meanings. The article can be taken in a negative thought or a positive. Depending on how the audience would like to interpret it.

Act Fearlessly

In the following picture there are 5 males. Three of them are African American and the other two would be defined as Asian or Mexican. All of them are sitting in a line with a background of a concrete wall. They all look fearless with anger printed in their eyes. A logo is printed across their faces which repeats,” What you looking at”. The main idea of the image is to be and act fearless regardless of your race. I believe this is the message, because I see two different races who are united and seem like they won’t let anyone regulate what they do. Standing up for their rights as a whole. This message is important, because sometimes people can take your kindness for weakness. Trying not to let it bother you until one day you explode. It’s good to stand up for yourself and not let others run over you. Acting fearless as well as being courageous and confident in yourself.

I Am Nobody's Nigger

In class we watched a video called I am Nobody's Nigger. The video included poetic phrases which helps the audience  realize what the main point was. The main point is being mindful of the history towards the phrase as well as using it.

Is it wrong to call someone a nigger? Does it make it OK for African Americans to call one another a nigga,? These are Questions I had during our decision in class. After reading and viewing the YouTube video I Am Nobody’s Nigger I have a better outlook on the phrase and wonder why people seem to call one another that name without second guessing or thinking of the history behind that name. I don’t use the word nigga or nigger, because I feel it’s degrading to my race, it’s disrespectful and I feel that I’m feeding off of slavery by using this term. I say feeding off of slavery by using this term, because blacks were called that name before they were beat end, hung, or raped. Saying this term makes me feel like accepting my ancestor being called a nigger and that’s why I don’t say it.

I don’t believe that nigger and nigga are two separate phrases. I don’t see a difference in using the two phrases it’s the same meaning to me. The definition of nigger is slang, meant to define a dark skin black person. This is the definition I found on dictionary.com. When you think about the definition and how it was used back then you come to the conclusion that it was meant for to degrade dark skin people. My question is why use it? Regardless if it’s slang 50 years later?

The Power The Media Can Have: Doll Face

Today in class we watched a YouTube video which includes how the media impacts lives. The video was made to show how far a person would go to look beautiful. Being accepted in today’s society has impact one’s self confidence. The media mostly impacts young adults. Many young adults want to look as good as the women on television, many may feel that they need to look a certain way to be accepted in today’s society. The media provides products which can make you look and feel beautiful. When you look around all you would see is beautiful airbrushed women who have silky straight hair, smooth skin, clean and clear faces and this impacts a lot of young adults, because they might wonder why they don’t look like that and may want to make some changes to their body regardless of the price. This relates to Adults as well who are influenced by billboards and want to do whatever it takes to change who they are. Plastic surgery is a big topic for many adults. Breast Implants can play a huge role, according to the MTV show True Life.

I am not influenced by today’s society, or beauty tends, however I have people around me who are. Everyone is born with different identities and features which makes a person who they are. I feel you shouldn't have to do certain things like: getting lip injections to fit into today’s society, because that’s not who you are or what you were born with.

Admittance to a Better Life

Admittance to a better life, a passage which empowers the audience with quotes. A quote I felt was up lifting was “ I believe that education has the power to transform a person’s life for me, education was the rabbit hole which I escaped the underclass”. I felt this quote was uplifting, because it spoke upon facts. Without an education and the ability of learning you will not be able to achieve many goals you may have set for yourself. I feel that education can be a way out for many people. An education can provide the opportunity to open many doors therefore; education goes beyond a high school diploma. Receiving a degree, being able to be in a field that you are interested in, shows the dedication put forth to make your aspiration and dream come true.

My goal is to become a registered nurse. I am interested in becoming a RN, because I feel this field would satisfy humanity and bring self satisfaction. The passion to help my community and families is my biggest motivation. In conclusion, the passage “ admittance to a better life” is a simple story which allows the audience to understand how to be strong minded and focused on what achievements and goals they have set. Providing empowering phrases and quotes to help the audience realize all things are possible.

Creative Solutions to Life's Challenges

Creative solutions to life's challenges, an article which expresses a mothers way of love and hope. I made many connections with this article, because I remember my late grandmother sewing, finding ways to feed her children. The article provides the audience with imagery that help others relates to the story like myself. I made another connection to the title, because the article provides basic instruction on how mothers make ends meet.

“I believe that happy children are those given the freedom to be expressive, to discover, to create their own ”refrigerators door” masterpiece. . When you are young you are able to create your personality. Your dislikes, likes. Creating your own personality at such a young age can help you discover you inner self as you grow older. I believe that this statement is true, I say this because as a child I always had a smile on my face, and I was always happy. I would express myself without being judged. Discovering new things such as hobbies.

“ I believe that the highest quality of life is full of art and creative expression and that all people deserve it”. I agree with this quote, because life is what you make it. People create a lifestyle that can be full of arts and creativity. This quote symbolizes the way many may think of life. Life is an expression of art, creativity, knowledge, power, money, but ends with your point of view of self.

America's Humanity

Actions is what separates a belief from an opinion, beliefs are imprinted through actions.” I believe this quote speaks upon religion. You can say you are a true “Christian,” however your actions may speak otherwise, therefore that may intervene with ones opinion about the culture of that religion. Actions speak louder than words. Yes as Americans we have rights, such as freedom of speech, and freedom of religion which gives us an opportunity to be a part of any culture we choose. I liked how the passage provides the audience with real life situation also, how the situation was handled. He provides the audience with quotes, facts, and stories which can help those who are unable to stand up for themselves.

“ I believe America is humanity’s best opportunity to Make God’s wish that we come to know one another in a reality”. This quote was stunning, and I admire the passage. I feel this passage provides the audience with a future of knowing that America has a brighter day and God, will provide his people with the reality of accepting one another regardless of religion, race or color.

Defined By Actions or Features?

"Why don’t you act black”? How do you define acting black? People believe this based upon your wardrobe, how you speak, and the type of music you listen to. After, reading the passage today in class about the young black boy, and his experience. I realize how people use this phrase as slang.

In today’s society “why don’t you act black”? or “ you act so black”, means you’ve adapted to the culture and lifestyle. If I was told this question I would want to define what acting black was. I would wonder why I am being thrown into a stereotype. I say thrown into a stereotype, because many would consider an African Americans to be loud, criminals, and ghetto. This question causes a tremendous impact on me, because I believe it is degrading not only to myself, but my culture. Not all African Americans are loud, criminals and the phrase “ghetto”. Stereotypes comes from a person or people seeing or hearing about a group of people who may have been doing absurd things which may cause their culture to be labeled and judged.

America's Beauty

America’s Beauty Is In Its Diversity by Alaa El-Saad. A beautiful piece which helps the audience realize that being different is an amazing thing. This article helped me reflect on my life, throughout my years as a high school student. I remember dressing and acting differently . In high school everyone tried to fit into the fashion statement of that month. Once a new item came into stores, the clothing that was worn was no longer “in style”. I continued to wear previous items in the fashion statement, that may perhaps” went out of style”. Thinking to myself I purchased it, so why not continue to wear it?

I made a connection to the article immediately, because I love showing others that you can have confidence even when you are considered an “outsider”. One who doesn’t dress or look quite the same as others. Alaa El Saad explained that many questioned her politely about her
Hijab, and many giggled, because she looked different. She didn’t mind it. I believe once you have confidence within yourself what others say about you cant define who you are, because you have the mind set and confidence to know what you are.

I believe this article can, help many of our Americans today who dislike themselves, because what others say about them. This article shows how to put forth confident in your everyday regardless of what others may say. Learning how to respect and receive confidence within your self can help you. Learning that people look different than you an act differently makes the world diverse and its finest.
