Defined By Actions or Features?

"Why don’t you act black”? How do you define acting black? People believe this based upon your wardrobe, how you speak, and the type of music you listen to. After, reading the passage today in class about the young black boy, and his experience. I realize how people use this phrase as slang.

In today’s society “why don’t you act black”? or “ you act so black”, means you’ve adapted to the culture and lifestyle. If I was told this question I would want to define what acting black was. I would wonder why I am being thrown into a stereotype. I say thrown into a stereotype, because many would consider an African Americans to be loud, criminals, and ghetto. This question causes a tremendous impact on me, because I believe it is degrading not only to myself, but my culture. Not all African Americans are loud, criminals and the phrase “ghetto”. Stereotypes comes from a person or people seeing or hearing about a group of people who may have been doing absurd things which may cause their culture to be labeled and judged.

  1. i understand your point i think that sometimes having a bad experience with people of one race we must think that all of them are like that, but we should understand that is not how it is we should not criticize a race just because we had a bad situation with someone.

  2. Exactly, It's sad that many people base a culture of people in a category, because of one bad experience.
